Marvellous Matheran

Matheran at approx. 650m AMSL is a densely forested plateau barely 2hrs drive from Mumbai. Vehicles are not permitted beyond Dasturi car park, although a toy train service exists between Neral and Matheran market. You can also walk, horse ride or go by hand pulled riksha from Dasturi. MTDC hotel is the only one near Dasturi, all the rest involve going at least near the market place. Tip: walk along the railway tracks as its much easier than the rubbly pathway which is dusty due to horse traffic. Also wear proper walking shoes and use a walking stick which also serves to ward off naughty monkeys who are lying in wait to snatch your goodies. The fresh cool forest air hits you as you enter Matheran. There are plenty of forested trails all leading to various Points such as Monkey Pt, Louisa Pt, Chowk Pt etc. Apart from monkeys, langurs and snakes, you can also spot giant squirrels in the tree tops - Ratufa elphinstonii. Lots of birds but hard to spot through the foliage. Plenty of cuisines at all budgets in the main market area though most hotels include all meals in their package. Divadkars by the station does an excellent Marathi - Punjabi veg thali which is satisfying and VFM. We always eat only there. Good buys are chikki, jambul honey, leather footwear and accessories and dry grass products. Locals are very courteous and aware of the benefits of tourism. Enjoy Matheran best in off season when few people are there, its magnificent in the monsoons but slushy, but even in peak season you can always find lots of places to yourself.
