My recent trip to the Nilgiris

We have just returned from a dream trip to the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu. We flew to Coimbatore and were picked up by our trusted and reliable cab driver Jagdeesh (09442370007). From there we drove via Karamadai, and Geddai through hair pin bends upto Avalanche lake where we stayed at the forest guest house. Avalanche is in a reserve forest area, full of meadows, grasslands, streams, lakes and dense shola forests and plantation forests. We were delighted to see nilgiri langur families in the trees of the resthouse as well as malabar giant squirrels, and feral toda buffaloes near the lake. The lake is crystal clear and one can spend hours doing nothing by the shores. Upper Bhavani reservoir is a 30km drive from here where you can easily spot bisons and deer. Emerald is another lake on the Ooty road which is as the name suggests, emerald turquoise in colour. On the way to Ooty we stopped by Cairn Hill and walked through the tall plantations. At Ooty we stayed at Hotel Tamil Nadu close to Charring Cross which offered good off season discounts and large rooms. The food is however, avoidable. Spent time at the Botanic gardens - Todamund and Lake - lakeshore train ride is different. A train ride on the Ooty Coonoor Ooty sector is also recommended as you get different views along the tracks. We did a day trip to Dodabetta Peak the highest point and then to Pykara Lake which has been recently cleaned up, tourist dept to be commended. En route tip: Dont stop at crowded, filthy "Pine Forest" - go 1km ahead and cut through the clean woods to the Kamaraj lake shore. Ditto at 9th mile shooting meadows, go 500km ahead cut through the woods and you have the huge expanse of meadows all to yourself with the same or better view of Mukurthy peak. At Pykara waterfalls, walk along the river banks as far as you can, its really nice. Boating is a must at Pykara Lake, you may be lucky to spot bisons or deer at the far shores. We returned to Coimbatore via the Kotagiri route which was ever so much nicer being a good road and no traffic at all. A mild sleet permeated the air with eucalyptus fragrance and beautiful mist. The drive is forested with tea estates almost all the way to Mettupalayam with good views of Bhavani Sagar dam. A good trip, we must return soon.
