Darjeeling: The name 'Darjeeling' came from the Tibetan words, 'dorje' meaning thunderbolt (originally the scepter of Indra) and 'ling' a place or land, hence 'the land of the thunderbolt'. A land-mark year in the History of Darjeeling was 1835, but it would be appropriate to trace its History before that. Prior to its acquisition by the East India Co. in 1835, Darjeeling formed a part of Sikkim and for a brief period of Nepal. However neither the history of Sikkim, nor the history of Nepal furnish any account of its early history.... More lodging info

Both the streams meet the Ranipul and flow south as the main Ranikhola before it joins the Teesta at Singtam. Most of the roads are steep, with the buildings built on compacted ground alongside them.... This short tour will take you to Darjeeling, Gangtok and Pelling. Darjeeling - the name derived from the monastery of Dorje Ling (means place of the Thunderbolt) that once stood on Observatory Hill. The presence of Kanchenjunga (8598 m/28,209 ft), India's highest peak dominates the town. Gangtok - the capital of Sikkim, reflects this tiny state's extraordinary ethnic diversity. Until 1975, Sikkim was a kingdom, was ruled by the Chogyals, Buddhists of Tibetan Origin whose dynasty began in the 17th centuary. In 1975 the population of Sikkim voted overwhelmingly to join the Indian Republic, ending the rule of Palden Thondup, the last Chogyal. ... More lodging info
