Literally meaning the ‘Gateway to God, Haridwar is one of the seven holiest places of the Hindus and it is so believed because the angels (devas) have set their foot in this place. The Ganga Aarti at Har-ki-Paudi ghat in Haridwar is a remarkable experience. The diyas decorated with flowers and incense sticks is a beautiful spectacle of colour as the reflection of the light on the water makes it a vibrant yellow colour. It is considered one of the holiest ghats in Haridwar. Other than this, one can also view a lot of mansions and having intricate murals and stonework. The Chanda Devi Temple is a 3kms trek from Chandi Ghat on the Neel Parvat. According to legend the demons Chanda – Munda was killed by Chandi Devi and hence the name. The Mansa Devi Temple situated atop Bilwa Parwat is a popular tourist destination as one can take a cable car ride which gives a picturesque view of the landscape. The main temple houses two idols of the Goddess, one with three mouths and five arms, while the other one has eight arms. The Maya Devi Temple is one of the Siddhapeth where the heart and naval of Goddess Sati had fallen. The Daksha Mahadeva Temple is the place where King Daksha Prajapati (father of Goddess Sati) performed a yagna wherein he deliberately did not invite Lord Shiva. However, Lord Shiva arrived uninvited and was insulted by Sati’s father. Seeing this Sati felt infuriated and self immolated herself in the yagna kund which is known as the Sati Kund. This is situated south of Kankhal town and is 4kms from Haridwar. The Sapt Rishi Ashram and the Sapt Sarovar is the place where Ganga split herself into seven currents so that the Sapt Rishis meditating there would not be disturbed. Pawan Dham is another place where tourists like to visit to view the spectacular display of art work completely made from glass pieces. Anandamoyi Ma Ashram houses the Samadhi of Anandamoyi Ma the great saint of India. Every evening aartis and satsangs are organized in this ashram.
