One of the most sought after hill stations in India is Kodaikanal. Situated on the southern crest of the upper Palani hills near Madurai, this hill resort stands at an altitude of about 2133 meters above sea level. The ideal time to visit this place is during the summers (March to May) when the temperature varies from 20 – 11 degrees Centigrade. One of the main attractions is the Kodai Lake which is about 03 kms from the bus stand. There are luxury boats and also fishing can be done in the lake but with prior permission from the Inspector of Fisheries. One of the oldest observatories in the world is the Kodaikanal Observatory. It is open to visitors on Friday mornings. The Apple Research Station on the Fairy Falls Road studies new varieties of fruits and vegetables. Byrant Park has a wide and varied selection of flowers and plants and is a hot tourist spot especially during weekends and the summer season. Maximum tourists visit this park to attend the flower and vegetable show which is held each year in the month of May. Chettiar park on the way to Kurinji temple is more quiet. The presence of Dolmens and Kistavens dwelling and burial places from the Stone and Iron Ages has put Kodaikanal on the anthropological map. Sadly, many of them has been destroyed; but the more intact site is on Dolmen Circle. Coaker’s walk is half a kilometer from Kodaikanal and is a narrow pedestrian path constructed by Lt. Coaker. It gives a spectacular view of the plains. Silver Cascade is a picturesque waterfall located 8kms away on the Main Ghat Road as one approached Kodaikanal from Kodai Road station. The Bear Shola Falls is an ideal picnic spot located 1.6kms from the bus stand and within 2 kms from Kodai Lake. The falls are at its best during monsoons. Grand Cascade or Pambar Falls is a vibrant and magnificent waterfall located 04 kms away from Kodaikanal. The highest waterfall in India is the Rat Falls or the Thalaiyur Falls which is on the Ghat Road to Kodaikanal.
