The picturesque hill station of Nainital is located in Uttaranchal and is well connected by road and rail. By road it is connected from Delhi, Agra, Dehradun, Haridwar, Lucknow, Kanpur and Bareilley. The shorter route is to take a train from Delhi to Kathgodam and then drive to Nainital from Kathgodam. The main tourist attraction is the Naini Lake which offers holidayers ample opportunities for yachting and boating. In the northern end of the lake is Mallital and Tallital is on the southern end of the lake. The Mall Road runs on one side of the lake and is the main market square which is dotted by shops, restaurants, hotels, banks etc. This place is usually the favorite place for visitors who like to take a leisurely walk on the Mall Road. On the other side of the lake is the Thandi Road. It has the Pashan Devi temple and is accessible only by foot as vehicles are not allowed in this road. The Aerial Ropeway which connects Snow View Point with Nainital is one of the main attractions. The Governor’s House or the Raj Bhavan, built in the lines of Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the Governor of Uttaranchal. To visit this place, one must obtain prior permission. Located in Sukha Tal (01km from Mallital) is the Caves Garden, which is a very popular spot as it has beautifully inlaid garden. About 03 kms away from the bus stand, at an altitude of 1951 meters is the Hanuman Garhi which is famous for its sunset view. The Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences is a centre for astronomical studies and optical tracking of artificial satellites. It is situated on the Manora Peak and is 01km from HanumanGarhi. The most easily accessible hill top is Snow View at an altitude of 2270 meters and 2.5 kms from Nainital. It offers a spectacular view of the snow capped Himalayas. The highest peak of Nainital is the Naina Peak or China Peak. One can get a panoramic view of the Himalayas and a birds eye view of the hill station. It is 06kms from Nainital and is at an altitude of 2611 meters. Dorothy Seat is an excellent picnic spot. It was built as an ode to Dorothy Kellet, an English lady painter. Visitors also come to Tiffin Top to get a panoramic view of the Himalayas and the neighbouring country side.
