It is well connected by rail and the nearest railhead is Nathdwara Road. Srinathji  an image of Krishna was originally enshrined at Vraja Bhoomi at Mount Govardhana near Mathura. During the Mughal emperor AurangzebÂs reign, this image was brought to Mewar to protect it from being destroyed by the emperor. It is believed that the chariot bringing this image got stuck in Nathdwara and subsequently a temple was erected by the Rana of Mewar. The idol in this temple represents the form of Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhana hill thereby subduing Lord Indra (the king of the devas) who was pouring incessant downpour and which was causing a lot of difficulties to the cowherds of Gokul. Originally it was worshipped in a humble shrine, but later it was shifted to a larger temple in the same vicinity. It is believed that the image is self manifested. This image was brought to Nathdwara in the 17th century A.D. The temple complex also has an image of Lord Krishna which is supposed to be dated to the 12th century B.C. This image is venerated and draws a lot of visitors. One of the most famous Vaishnavite shrine built in the 17th century A.D. is in Nathdwara. Tourists coming to Nathdwara also visit the Rajasamand Lake built by Maharaja Raj Singh in 1660 A.D. The embankment of this dam is adorned by many chhatris and ornamental arches.
