Pahalgam is one of the most famous hill stations of
Jammu and Kashmir. It is originally Shepherds’ village with breathtaking views. It is Ninety five km east of Srinagar at an altitude of 2,130 metres. Pahalgam is situated at the junction of the streams flowing from Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder river. Pahalgam is in
Anantnag district. Pahalgam is base camp for the pilgrims of
Amarnath yatra .
Chandanwari 16 kms from Pahalgam, is the starting point of the yatra that takes place every year in the
month of Sawan (July to August). Pahalgam is situated among the soaring mountains, glistening glaciers, gushing silvery streams of ice water and vast meadows and pastures, amidst lofty deodars, fir, pine, junipers and many other conifers.

Hajan, on the way to Chandanwari, is an idyllic spot for a picnic. Pahalgam has within it atleast eight tiny villages, one of which is Mamal. There is a Shiva temple here, generally considered to be Kashmir's oldest existing temple, dating to the 5th century. One can do pony riding, trekking,
fishing in Pahalgam. One can also play golf there. One can
buy woolens, Gabbas and Namdas from the local shops. Pahalgam has a number of Hotels and lodges of various types which are open only during summer months. The weather in Pahalgam is alpine. Summers (April-June) are mild while winters (November-February) are cold. The best time to visit is from April to November.
