General Information

The captivating, enthralling and enchanting land of Assam is the land where the river Brahmaputra flows. It is the land where there is exquisite flora and fauna. Here one can find flowers that are elegant and beautiful, animals that are rare and people who are welcoming, friendly and jovial.

History

Assam was a well-known place in ancient history. Long before in the time of epics. The state Assam was called by the name 'Kamarupa' or 'Pragjyotish' If you go down the history, the land of Assam got inhabited by the homo sapiens in about 2000 BC. Many dynasties inhabited the land from time to time. One of the earliest dynasty that occupied Assam was believed to be the Varman dynasty.  The rule of this empire extended from 400 AD to 13th century. The Ahoms endeavored into Assam in about 1228 AD. Towards the end of 18th century the Ahom Empire buckled and the Burmese got the power over Assam thus invoking British intrusion to suppress the Burmese.

Geography

The total land area of the mesmerizing state of Assam is approximately 78,438 square kilometers. It is located between 89o42' to 96o30' East Longitude and 22o19' to 28o16' North Latitude. This beguiling and enticing land of Brahmaputra is rich in flora and fauna. On this land you will find dense forests and beautiful rivers. Assam is bordered by Bhutan in the North; Arunachal Pradesh in the East; Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram in the south; Meghalaya in the South-West and West Bengal and Bangladesh on the West.

Climate/Temperature

The climate of Assam is typified by excessive humidity. The seasons are separated into the cold season and the monsoon season. The cold season is from the month of October to February and the rest of the year is rainy. The copious amount of rainfall throughout the year sets apart the land of Assam in terms of its climate. The most distinctive feature of the climate of Assam is the bountiful rainfall between March and May.

Religions

Talking about the culture and traditions of Assam, its literature and music are interlaced in the social fabric and transcend barriers of class and caste. The main religion of the state is Hinduism.

Languages Spoken

The main language spoken in Assam is the Assamese. Some people also speak Hindi and English. In the Barak Valley, Bengali is spoken.

The total population of the land of Assam is about 2,66,38,407. The population of Assam consists of the migrants from Burma and China who came into Assam after the mongoloid migration. Thus Assam demonstrates a fusion of Mongol-Aryan culture. An idyllic meeting ground for sundry races, Assam gives shelter to torrents of human waves carrying with them distinct cultures and trends of civilization. People from different walks of life and from different backgrounds acme and inhabited on the land of Assam. They contributed in their own way to the culture and heritage of Assam. This led to the formation of a unique community, which came to be known as the Assamese.
