General Information

The antiquity of Bihar is apparent from its name. The name Bihar is derived from a word, ‘Vihara’ that means monastery. Bihar can be addressed as the land of monasteries. History

Geography

Bihar is a state gifted with wide-ranging, fertile agricultural land and rich mineral deposits. The topography of the land can be easily separated into two halves One is the fertile alluvial plain occupying the northern side of the land. It is referred to as the Gangetic Valley. Second is the Chhotanagpur plateau, which is located in the southern part of the state. It absorbs roughly 1/3rd of the south, extending up to the southern border with Orissa.

Climate/Temperature

Bihar enjoys a continental monsoon type of climate owing to its great distance from the sea. There are three major seasons, summer, winter and monsoon season. Summer season lasts from March to May, winter season extends from December to February and monsoon season is experienced in the months of June to November.

Religions

The land of monasteries is dwelled by a majority of Hindus. Hinduism is the major religion of Bihar. Muslims comprise a vast minority. Christianity also finds its place in the rich mineral state of Bihar. The astonishing assortment of religions had born here, religious events that occurred here and religious natives and influential people that lived and died here cause one to coin this place the birthplace of India's spirituality. Languages Spoken

The total population of Bihar as of 1st March 2001 stood at 82,878,796 as per the provisional results of the Census of India 2001. Even after the state of Jharkhand has been chucked out of the state of Bihar still it remains at the third position in terms of population. Bihar is still the third most populated state of India.

Bihar is the land of monasteries. There are many places of tourist interest here. One if the Bodhgaya where Gautama Buddha (Siddhhartha) came seeking truth in his young age. Then there is Nalanda, 90 kms south of Patna. Other places to visit in Bihar are the Chhotanagpur plateau, Betla, Vaishali, Rajgir and Valmiki Nagar.
