Manipur – a jeweled land ! ”

 
General Information
Snuggling profound within a verdant emerald spot of North East India is the wondrously gorgeous little Shangrila called Manipur. The literal meaning of the word ‘Manipur’ is - "a jeweled land". This little corner is a veritable, paradise on earth where Mother Nature has showered her bounty extra benignly. Manipur`s salubrious and striking scenery, shaman surroundings and clean climate are all that fascinate tourists. Untouched and undiscovered, Manipur assures to be a fabulous tourist detection of the 21st century. An egg-shaped valley bounded by blue green hills, rich in art and tradition has enthused metaphors such as the "Switzerland of the East" with cascading rapids, tripping rivers, carpets of flowers and exotic blooms.
History
The history of Manipur dates back to the time when Burmese tried to invade northeastern side of India including Manipur that led to frequent clashes with the Nagas. Then in the year 1826, Manipur became a part of India. This happened according to a treaty between the British and Raja Jai Singh towards the end of the Indo-Burmese war. After India got independence in the year 1947, Manipur became a Union Territory. After some years it subsequently got statehood on 21st January 1972.
Geography

Manipur is located in the northern part of India. The total area of the region is approximately 29.57 sq. kms. It is situated at an altitude of 790 meters above sea level. The mini Switzerland lies in the south of Nagaland and north of Mizoram. It is bounded by Myanmar on western and southern side. It is situated between latitudes 23.80 o N to 25.68 o N and longitudes 93.03oE to 94.78o E.

Climate/Temperature

Manipur is a state that experiences extreme climatic conditions. Summers are scorching hot and winters are frosty. The maximum temperature in summer is recorded to be around 32 degree C. In winter the mercury falls to 0 degree C making it nippy in the wintertime. The coldest month is January and the hottest month is July. During most of the year, Manipur experiences a sub-tropical salubrious monsoon climate with approximate average annual rainfall of 1980.8 mm. Rainfall on the whole is abundant in the state. The monsoon season extends from the month of May to the month of October. The winter stretches from November to March. The perfect time to visit the beautiful state of Manipur is between the months of October and February when the weather is pleasantly cold.

Religions

Manipuri religion is unlocked, widespread in outlook and without any founder prophet or any holy book. The profoundly theoretical Manipuri religion advocates the universal concept of equality of mankind. It believes that all human made on the image of God. Besides this, the major religions in the state are Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.

The major language spoken in the region is Manipuri.

People / Population

The total population of Manipur is approximately 23,88,068. Of the entire population, 58.9% reside in the valley and the lingering 41.1% dwell in the hill areas. The hills are inhabited mainly by the tribals and the valley by the Meiteis.

Famous for its rich cultural heritage, scant wildlife and fascinating flowers Manipur was described as the ‘Land of Jewels’ by Jawaharlal Nehru. The unpolluted and unexploited greenery of the state is also a succor for the visitors. Major tourist attractions in the state are:

  • Keibul Lamjao National Park – This park is the habitat to the Brow antlered deer found nowhere else
  • Loktak – It is a fresh water lake.
  • Paona Bazar and Khwairanbam Bazar – These two bazaars are in the capital city of Mizoram that is Imphal.
  • Bishnupur Temple – It is a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Manipur is the land for adventure freaks. Many types of adventure sports are offered on the land. Adventure lovers find Manipur a perfect spot. Various adventure sports like trekking, rock climbing, Para sailing are offered in the hills of the region.
