Punjab - the land of five rivers”

 
General Information
The sparkling land of Punjab is a land of exhilarating culture, myriad images of swaying emerald green fields and jovial people whose vigorous pastoral and bucolic ways of camaraderie and bonhomie are very much a part of their heritage. The first and foremost impression of Punjab one gets is that of a land pulsating with prosperity. The vivacious and effervescent land of five rivers lures the tourists towards it. The plains of Punjab, with their abundant soil and copious water supply, are unsurprisingly matched to be the breadbasket for India.
History
In the 6th century BC, for the period of the dominion of Cyrus the Great, Punjab was a fraction of the Persian Empire. In the 4th century BC, Punjab became a part of Chandragupta Maurya's empire. In the 11th century Mohamed of Ghazni invaded Punjab. He was a ruler of Central Asia. Towards the end of the 18th century, Ranjit Singh build the beautiful land of Punjab into a powerful kingdom. Modern Punjab got proper recognition in the year 1966. It was established on 1st Nov. 1966. Chandigarh was made the capital of Punjab. It became a separate union territory and still remains the capital of Haryana and Punjab.
Geography

The total land area of Punjab is around 50,362 sq km. The scintillating and dazzling land of Punjab extends from the latitudes 29.30-degree north to 32.32-degree north and longitudes 73.55-degree east to 76. 50-degree east. The ostensible land of five rivers is a very fertile region. It is surrounded on the west by Pakistan, on the north by Jammu and Kashmir, on the northeast by Himachal Pradesh and on the south by Haryana and Rajasthan. A belt of undulating and surging hills extends along the northeastern part of the state at the foot of the Himalayas.

Climate/Temperature

The glittering and alluring land of five rivers experiences three main seasons. They are summer, winter and monsoon season. The summer season extends from the month of April to the month of June. The heat is unbearable at that time. Rainy season of from July to September and winter season is from December to February. The mercury rises maximum to about 40 degrees in the summer season. The minimum temperature recorded in winter is around 5 degrees.

Religions

There are two main religions in the state, which are Hinduism and Sikhism. The percentage of Hindus is around 34.46 % and Sikhs amount to 62.95% of population. Some other religions are also seen on the land, which account to just 2.59% of the entire population of Punjab. In the 15th century, Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak that became was widely accepted by the people living around there.

Languages Spoken

The people of Punjab speak two main languages. These are Hindi and Punjabi. A majority of population speaks Punjabi.

People / Population
The total population of Punjab is approximately 21.6 million. The number of people per sq km is around 433. The people of Punjab are very jovial and friendly. They mix with each other very well. More than 60 per cent of the people follow Sikhism, and they are called Punjabis
Places to Visit / Attractions

There are two chief places to visit in Punjab. They are Amritsar and Chandigarh.

  • Amritsar – There are lot of places to visit in Amritsar. It is the holy city of Sikhs. It has grown from a sacred village pond into a spiritual temporal place where the Sikh culture flourished. You can visit the Golden Temple, the sacred Sikh Sanctuary, Community Kitchen, and Jallian Wala Bagh.
  • Chandigarh – Chandigarh is famous for its gardens. The artistic rock garden is carved out of the waste materials and the beautiful flower garden is known for its beauty nation wide.
Adventure Sports

Punjab is a hub for various adventure sports. Many sports like trekking, rock climbing, Para gliding etc can be enjoyed on the land of Punjab.
