General Information
Tripura is the land of evolution. It’s a mix and match of various mores and traditions. Many cultures co exist on this land. There is a beautiful amalgamation of various backgrounds of civilization. Tripura - a pleasing conciliation between the old order and the new; a synthesis of styles and cultures of the hills and plains. The capital of Tripura is Agartala.
History
Not much is known about Tripura’s ancient history. The rudiments of the knowledge about Tripura’s history dates back to the time of the reign of the Ashoka. Tripura finds reference in the Ashokan pillars of the third century BC. In the thirteenth century, Tripura came under the rule of the Manikya dynasty. After that, in the seventeenth century, Tripura came under the management of Mughals. Monarchy in Tripura ended on 9th September 1947. Tripura formally became part of India on Oct. 15, 1949, and a Union Territory on 1st November 1956. It became an independent state of the Indian Union on Jan. 21, 1972.
Geography

Tripura is located in the North East corner of India. The total land area of Tripura is approximately 10,486 sq kms. Tripura is surrounded on three sides by Bangladesh. It has an International border of around 839 sq kms. On the other sides, Mizoram and Assam bound Tripura. The inter-state border is approximately 164kms. The state is stretched in between 22°56' and 24°32' North Latitudes and 91°09' & 92°20' Longitudes. Tripura is a hilly & land locked State gifted with vast green forests and enchanting hilly terrains.

Climate/Temperature
The climate of Tripura is basically hot and clammy. There are mainly three seasons experienced in the state. They are summer, winter and monsoon. The summer season extends from March to May. The temperature during summer is recorded to be between 25° C to 36° C. Winter season starts in October and stretches up to the month of February. The temperature recorded in the winter season is 14° C - 34° C. The average maximum temperature is 35oC in May-June and the average minimum temperature is 10.5oC in December-January. Rainy season is from May to August. The average rainfall is around 230cm/annum.
Religions
Tripura is principally a Bengali Community, in spite of the 19 Scheduled Tribes, that form a foremost chunk of the population. Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and Christianity are the main religions followed in Tripura.
Languages Spoken
The main languages spoken in the state are Tripuri, Manipuri and Bengali. A major portion of the population speaks Bengali. Hindi and English are also spoken by a chunk of population.
People / Population
The total population of the state of Tripura is approximately 35. 82 Lakhs. Out of this, the Urban population is around 4.21 lakhs and rural population is approximately 27.57 lakhs.

  • Sipahijala - This is a botanical garden with a small zoo.
  • Jambai – This is a hill range with awesome scenic beauty.
  • Ujjayant Palace - Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya built this palace in 1901.
  • Temple of Chaturdasa Devata - This temple is dedicated to 14 gods and goddesses.
  • Tripura Government Museum - This museum comprises if some rarest stone images, old coins and archaeological articles
  • Neer Mahal - This is a water-palace built in Rudrasagar Lake.
