Festivals

Due to the multiplicity and miscellany of various cultures and traditions, many festivals are celebrated in the city of Darjeeling. It so happens that there is a festival every month due to the diversity of the population.  Many Hindu and Tibetan festivals are celebrated on the mesmerizing land of Darjeeling. Some of the major festivals and celebrations in the county are:

  • New Year’s Eve – The New Year is celebrated with a great pomp and show. It is always a special day for all the people of the city. The celebrations continue whole night before the New Year begins.
  • Republic Day - 26th January is India's Republic Day. This is a public holiday and different areas of Darjeeling celebrate this occasion with special programmes.
  • Maghe Sankranti – This festival is celebrated in the month of January. In the middle of the month, some sections of the land celebrate this festival by eating only Tarool.
  • Holi – In the beginning of the month of March, Hindus in Darjeeling commemorate Holi by smearing each other with colored powder.
  • Buddha Jayanti – In the month of April, the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha is celebrated in some parts of the city.
