The history of
Gangtok dates back to the time when it was a mere hamlet. Then in 1840, the Enchey Monastery made it a pilgrimage center. Gangtok got recognition after that. In the 19th century it became a major stopover between British India and Tibet. After India got independence in 1947, Sikkim became a nation state and Gangtok was its capital. In 1975 the dominion was abrogated. That time
Sikkim became India’s 22nd state and Gangtok was still its capital. Till now Gangtok is the
capital city of Sikkim.
