There are many famous places in Gangtok. There is a sense of tranquility and peacefulness, symbolized by the stupas and monasteries of Gangtok. The major landmarks are:
- Directorate of handicrafts and handloom – This is a center for promoting, upgrading and keeping alive the cultural traditions and arts.
- Research Institute of Tibetology – This is a place, which is famous in the whole world for the study of Buddhist philosophy and religion. There are umpteenth number of statues, Buddhists icons, and things of art and craft.
- Deer park – This is another great tourist attraction in the capital city of Gangtok. The park is famous for its ardent beauty and natural habitat. An imposing statue of Buddha is situated here.
- Orchid Sanctuary – This beautiful sanctuary is situated just below the Institute of Tibetology. It is a beautiful place with around 200 and more species or orchids. This sanctuary is a energizer for the eyes, mind and soul. The sheer look of the beautiful orchids refreshes the mind and the body completely.
- Enchey monastery – This monastery is situated near the city center. The best time to visit this monastery is in December. This is the time when the annual religious dances are performed.
