One of the finest natural harbours on the Arabian sea coast, Kochi likes to show itself off in the evenings. That is when the lights around the harbour and seafront start twinkling and transport you to an almost fairytale-like atmosphere. The fairytale milieu suits Kochi admirably since it is one of the most laid-back of Kerala's cities.
Kochi comprises of mainland Ernakulam, the islands of Wilington, Bolgatty and Gundu in the harbour, Fort Cochin and Matancherry in the south and Vypeen Island in the north. It is these islands and the smell of sea air that lends Kochi its unique charm. Each of these islands have something unique to show. I have my mind set on a backwater cruise, and there is no better starting point than Kochi. The Queen of the Arabian Sea is the gate which opens Kerala's many bounties.
Kochi was founded in 1341 when a flood created a natural safe port. The city expanded rapidly after the royal family made it their new base in 1405. the city most probably derives its name from kocchazhi meaning new or small harbour.
