The Mughal emperor Jahangir referred to Kashmir as “Gar firdaus, ruhe zamin ast, hamin asto, hamin asto, hamin asto” (If there is a heaven on earth, it’s here, it’s here, it’s here).
Dal Lake
Srinagar has several tourist spots but the most important is the Dal Lake, the sprawling water body around which the life in Srinagar revolves. A boat ride in a shikara would get one right into panoramic view of the astounding beauty of the Kashmir valley. A stay in the boathouses on the Dal is an experience unmatched by any seven star hotels in the world. An adjoining Nagin lake is also a great experience.
Mughal Gardens
Srinagar's most famous and visited sightseeing places are its beautiful Mughal gardens. The locations of many film song sequences of the 60's and 70's, were built around the lakes by the Mughals, whose love for the Kashmir valley is legendary. The gardens are all typically layered terraces with waterways and fountains, neatly laid out flower beds in different colours and fantastic views of the lake and mountains - a personification of Paradise for the Mughals. The most famous is probably Shalimar, built by Emperor Jehangir for his Queen Nur Jahan, in 1616. The Nishat Bagh is another lovely garden with its 12 terraces representing the 12 signs of the zodiac. These terraces descend gradually and almost seem to merge into the lake. The other gardens Naseem Bagh and Pari Mahal and Cheshmashahi are also famous for excursions. The Shalimar Bagh and the Nishat Bagh are beautiful gardens located to the far eastern side of the Dal Lake.
